The China Wetland Museum in Hangzhou has launched its first major exhibition of the year, Treeverse, inviting visitors to explore a hidden ecological universe through the lens of a single tree.

Transforming the museum's special exhibition hall into a "tree hollow", the show presents 195 plant and animal specimens and is structured around four sections. Guided by the idea that one tree functions as an entire ecosystem, the exhibition leads visitors through a fallen-log time tunnel and a healing forest, encouraging them to rediscover the living tree house that breathes above the city.

Using a fallen tree as its narrative thread, the exhibition reorders specimens by six life spaces — roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds — revealing how animals, plants and microorganisms depend on trees for food, shelter and reproduction, and together weave an invisible but vital web of coexistence.

A dedicated section on urban tree neighbors turns attention to familiar street trees and historic specimens often overlooked in daily life. Interactive installations add sensory depth, including soundscapes of trees, infrared footage of wildlife, personal memories linked to urban trees and plant-based scents that evoke shared experiences.

The exhibition runs through May 31 and is free to the public, with guided tours, hands-on workshops and outdoor study programs offered alongside the display.
