Twenty-five large trees along Xianghu Lake in Xiaoshan district, Hangzhou, have been dressed in hand-knitted colorful sweaters, making for a cheerful winter sight.

So far, 22 trees near Jianbo Bridge on the west side of Hushan Square have put on the colorful outfits, with three more set to debut festive Year of the Horse designs around Spring Festival.

Each sweater is uniquely crafted, replacing paint with soft yarn and blending cartoon motifs, bold colors and playful expressions. From smiling cartoon faces to anthropomorphic designs complete with gloves and backpacks, the once-quiet trunks have become memorable characters, adding a sense of warmth and humor to the winter landscape.

The brightly dressed trees, standing out against the redwood forest and tranquil lake, have quickly become a popular photo spot among adults and children alike, filling the area with laughter.

According to local officials, the project is a way to combine public art with nature while encouraging people to slow down and appreciate the greenery. The sweaters were custom-made after weeks of careful measurements to ensure a proper fit for each tree. Visitors are kindly reminded to admire and photograph the display without pulling on the knitted pieces, helping preserve this cozy winter scene.
