As the Spring Festival approaches, Hangzhou's development momentum continues to accelerate, with a major breakthrough reported from Hong Kong.
A turbine unit independently developed by Hangzhou Steam Turbine Co has completed its first trial run at the city's first waste-to-energy facility, marking a key step forward for Hangzhou-made high-end equipment on the global stage.
The project, located on an artificial island near Shek Kwu Chau in Hong Kong, is the region's first waste incineration power plant. Once fully operational, it is expected to process over 1 million metric tons of municipal waste annually and generate about 800 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, easing landfill pressure while supplying stable power to hundreds of thousands of residents.
Engineers said the first run demonstrated the turbine's reliability under some of the world's strictest environmental and technical standards. The unit features advanced air-cooled exhaust technology, optimized low-pressure blades and a high-efficiency, lightweight design, improving both energy performance and emissions control. A 15-year lifecycle service plan and remote diagnostics system were also integrated from the design stage.
The breakthrough reflects a broader shift in Hangzhou's high-end equipment sector — from exporting single products to delivering full lifecycle solutions.
At nearly the same time, another project using the company's core equipment — a biomass power plant in Cote d'Ivoire — entered full commercial operation, supplying around 300 million kWh of green electricity annually.
From Hong Kong to Africa and upcoming projects in the Middle East and Central Asia, Hangzhou's advanced manufacturing is getting the city off to a solid start in the new year.
