Robots capable of playing piano, delivering parcels, threading needles and even simulating underwater fishing were showcased at the third China Embodied Intelligent Robot Industry Conference and Exhibition, which opened on March 11 at the Hangzhou International Expo Center.
The event brought together more than 200 exhibitors from across the robotics industry chain, including leading companies such as Unitree Robotics and Deep Robotics, alongside component suppliers and system integrators.
Among the highlights were advanced robotic "dexterous hands" designed for precise tasks. Companies demonstrated robots capable of playing musical instruments, sorting packages and handling delicate objects, reflecting growing interest in fine motor skills rather than just large-scale movements like running or jumping.
One lightweight robotic hand on display weighs only 370 grams but can lift up to 50 kilograms, enabling complex tasks such as screwing bolts, making dumplings and threading needles. Another model features more than 1,000 tactile sensors, giving it sensitive touch control for tasks like preparing ice cream without damaging the cone.
Despite rapid advances, experts say most robots today remain focused on so-called "3D" jobs — dangerous, dirty and dull tasks — such as industrial inspection, hazardous environment operations and repetitive factory work.
Industry observers note that while embodied intelligence is advancing quickly, robots widely performing household tasks may still be about a decade away. The strong public interest at the exhibition, however, highlights growing curiosity and expectations for the next wave of robotics innovation.
