A revamped version of the Kunqu Opera Age of Splendor premiered at the Zhejiang Xiaobaihua Yue Opera Theater on May 15-16, marking the 70th anniversary of the Zhejiang Jingkun Art Center.

Inspired by the story of Princess Taiping and China's female prime minister Shangguan Wan'er, the production blends Tang Dynasty (618–907) aesthetics with modern stage design while preserving the elegance of a traditional Kunqu performance.

Based on archaeological discoveries from Shangguan Wan'er's tomb, the opera reimagines the political intrigue and emotional bonds of the Tang era through a dual female lead narrative. The upgraded 2.0 edition features refined character development, immersive stage visuals and deeper emotional expression.

The production has drawn strong attention from young audiences and cultural influencers. Behind-the-scenes visits, cross-genre exchanges with opera performers, and creative collaborations helped the opera gain traction online before its premiere.

One of the most touching moments came when Lin Bing, a visually impaired girl with autism and a passion for Chinese opera, was invited to experience Kunqu Opera up close through a public welfare program. Guided through costume-dressing, movement and vocal training, she attended the premiere and experienced the beauty of this art form in her own way.

The performances also welcomed archaeologists involved in the excavation of Shangguan Wan'er's tomb, turning historical research into a living artistic dialogue.

Following its successful debut in Hangzhou, Age of Splendor will begin a nationwide tour, bringing the timeless beauty of Kunqu Opera to wider audiences across China.
