Early summer has arrived in Hangzhou as the first lotus flowers of the season have bloomed in the Gushan lotus area on West Lake's Gushan Island.

Two lotus blossoms opened simultaneously, marking the start of this year's lotus season. The flowering date is slightly earlier than usual and closely matches last year, when the first lotus was spotted on May 23.

Photography enthusiasts captured the newly opened flowers against the scenic backdrop of West Lake and Xiling Bridge. One local photographer said he first noticed emerging buds on May 15 and was delighted to find the blossoms in full bloom during an early morning visit.

The lotus area opposite Lamp Post No 027 in Gushan is currently the best spot for viewing and photography. Early morning and late afternoon are recommended for the best lighting conditions.

While the first blooms signal the arrival of the season, West Lake's peak lotus display is expected from late July to early August, when vast stretches of lotus leaves and flowers transform the lake into one of Hangzhou's most iconic summer landscapes.
