More than 30 students from US universities visited the Xiling Seal Engraver's Society near West Lake on June 3, experiencing traditional Chinese stone rubbing and engraving techniques.
The group included students from Yale University, the University of California, Berkeley, and Cornell University, traveling across Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou to explore China's culture and development.
During the hands-on workshop, students created rubbings of carved seals. One UC Berkeley student, Calla Duffield, produced a print featuring the Chinese character "樂" (joy), describing the experience as "very cool" and unexpectedly artistic.
Duffield also noted the prevalence of traditional culture in everyday Hangzhou life, saying she was surprised to see many young people wearing hanfu, or traditional Chinese clothing, in streets and shops.
She said her visit also fulfilled a personal promise to a Chinese exchange student she met in the United States, calling the trip both a cultural exploration and a friendship journey.
