A group of more than 30 American university students visited Meilin village in Hangzhou's Xiaoshan district as part of a summer study program organized by Peking University.

Meilin village, the birthplace of Zhejiang's rural vitalization initiative, offered the students a firsthand look at China's rural development efforts and the future of village development.

During an open discussion with local representatives, students raised questions about village governance, public services, industrial development, and residency policies. Among them was Aika Lanes from Montana State University, who showed particular interest in how local government support and rural businesses have helped improve residents' lives.

Eager to learn more, Lanes explored the village's health clinic, reading room, and landscaped public spaces, documenting her visit through photographs. She said she was especially impressed by the strong sense of community and belonging she observed.

Growing up in a small town in the United States, Lanes said she was struck by the village's organization, vitality, and livability. She believes rural communities in both countries can learn from one another's development experiences.

"I want to take these ideas about community programs and social organization back home and share them with others," she said. "I hope my hometown can one day have the same kind of vitality."
