At just 22, Cai Ziyi has become one of Hangzhou's youngest professional elderly caregivers after winning first prize in the 2026 Hangzhou Elderly Caregiver Skills Competition.

A native of Wenzhou, Cai holds both nursing and elderly-care qualifications. She chose elderly care after studying smart healthcare and elderly-care services at Zhejiang Dongfang Polytechnic. When she decided to work at a nursing home after graduation, her family initially worried about the low pay and demanding work. She stayed, however, and has formed close bonds with residents, many of whom have cognitive impairment.

Her work requires more than technical skills. She often has to patiently communicate with residents, ease their anxiety and help them with daily routines such as bathing and eating.

This year's competition highlighted the growing professionalization of the sector. Eighteen of the 60 contestants were born in the 2000s, accounting for 30 percent, the highest proportion in recent years.

Hangzhou now has more than 10,000 elderly caregivers and aims to have 28.5 certified caregivers for every 10,000 elderly residents in 2026. Measures include special allowances, clearer career pathways and recognition for outstanding young professionals.
