New Hangzhou plant turns construction waste into recycled building materials

Xingchuang Group's second production base in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, entered trial operation on July 29, making another step in the city's efforts to promote the recycling of construction waste.

Located in Qiantang district, the facility processes engineering muck, river silt and other urban solid waste into recycled building materials, supporting Hangzhou's zero-waste city initiative.

Covering 23,000 square meters, the base operates five fully digitalized production lines with end-to-end process control. Nearly 80 percent of the equipment was independently developed by the company. Upon reaching full capacity, the facility is expected to process at least 1 million metric tons of 15 types of urban solid waste annually, with an estimated annual output value of 150 million yuan ($22 million).

China generates more than 3.5 billion tons of construction waste each year, placing growing pressure on landfill space.

As the country has been accelerating the development of a circular economy and low-carbon industries, Xingchuang Group spent more than five years developing its proprietary sludge-to-stone technology.

Using processes such as material modification, non-fired solidification and catalytic curing, the technology converts waste into high-performance inorganic eco-stone and other recycled construction materials.

Independent testing shows the recycled products deliver a performance comparable to that of natural granite while costing at least 30 percent less. The materials are now used in more than 90 percent of municipal road projects in Wenzhou.

In Hangzhou, recycled materials produced from local construction waste have been used in the renovation of Zhijiang Road, including pedestrian walkways and pocket parks, demonstrating the practical application of circular construction materials.

The project offers a scalable model for cities seeking to recycle construction waste locally rather than relying on landfill. Xingchuang Group now operates seven production bases across China and expects to have more than 100 production lines in operation by the end of the year, further expanding the application of its low-carbon waste-recycling technology.
