Hangzhou AI powers new hyperspectral satellites

Two AI-powered hyperspectral satellites equipped with technology from Hangzhou-based STAR.VISION were launched into orbit from Haiyang, Shandong province, on Aug 5.
The Dongfang Xinglian 05 and 06 satellites, also known as the Dongfang Huiyan Hyperspectral 01 and 02, or Jinshan and Yinshan stars, each feature 400 TOPS of onboard AI computing power, enabling them to process remote-sensing data directly in orbit rather than sending large volumes of raw imagery back to Earth for analysis. In applications such as earthquake response, the technology could reduce data-processing time from hours to around 10 minutes.
The satellites also have international applications. One will provide crop monitoring services in Indonesia's Lampung Province, while the other was customized to monitor Uzbekistan's cotton industry. STAR.VISION said clients in more than 40 countries and regions have purchased its satellite data and AI services.
The two satellites are the first of the "Space String Computing Constellation," which plans to deploy more than 1,000 intelligent satellites.
Hangzhou is increasingly combining its strengths in AI, commercial space and digital trade. From January to May, the city's digital trade reached 152.49 billion yuan ($22.72 billion), accounting for nearly 40 percent of Zhejiang province's total.
