A group of 25 Belgian students and teachers recently completed a nearly two-week cultural exchange program in Shanghai and Zhejiang, gaining firsthand experience of Chinese language, traditional culture and contemporary development.

Hosted by Zhejiang University of Technology as part of the 2026 Chinese Bridge program, the trip included Chinese language classes and activities ranging from tai chi and calligraphy to traditional painting and intangible cultural heritage.

The group also visited Yiwu, where participants learned about livestream e-commerce and tried presenting products in multiple languages. At the Yiwu International Trade Market, known as the "world's supermarket," they practiced their newly learned Chinese while speaking with local merchants.

Pascal Buffin, Consul General of Belgium in Shanghai, also visited the group in Hangzhou and encouraged the students to learn more about China and build friendships with their Chinese peers.

"This journey opened my eyes and touched my heart," Belgian student Riyad Moussaoui said at the closing ceremony.
