Cookie, a 29-year-old educator from Morocco, is building a new life in Tonglu county, Hangzhou, where rivers, mountains and digital convenience have reshaped her idea of home.

Arriving in early 2024 to teach at a local kindergarten, Cookie initially came as a cultural explorer. Today, she describes herself as part of the community rather than a passerby. After eight years of teaching in Morocco, she chose Hangzhou for its openness, innovation and growing reputation as a hub for education and technology.

In the classroom, Cookie blends cultures with ease. She introduces African rhythms, stories and visuals into English lessons, helping Chinese children connect language learning with the wider world. "They are often surprised to learn Morocco is more than just deserts," she said, noting how shared experiences can bridge cultural gaps.

Life outside school has been equally transformative. From mobile payments and food delivery to online medical services, Hangzhou's digital ecosystem has become second nature. She also praises the city's strong sense of safety and its balance between urban life and nature.

Living in Tonglu, Cookie enjoys riverside walks, weekend trips to West Lake and community activities with neighbors from all walks of life. "Hangzhou doesn't feel like a foreign place," she said. "It feels like my second hometown."

Her journey reflects how Hangzhou's openness, livability and cultural inclusiveness are turning international residents from observers into active participants in the city's global story.
