A delegation of five school leaders from the United Kingdom visited Dongcheng No 2 Primary School of Hangzhou Normal University on March 20, engaging in a dialogue on education.
Led by James Tottie, headteacher of Sebert Wood Community Primary School, the group was welcomed with a lively dragon and lion dance performance, showcasing traditional Chinese sports rarely seen in British schools.
During the campus tour, visiting educators were particularly intrigued by a question wall displaying student-generated inquiries, designed to encourage curiosity and independent thinking. "This goes beyond homework — it builds a culture of inquiry," said deputy head Jamie Winch.
School principal Zheng Junhui said the school has focused on making learning more experiential, extending classrooms into labs, farms, communities and even the Qiantang River. The approach aligns with Sebert Wood School's "3R" values — Respect, Resilience and Readiness — highlighting shared educational goals despite different systems.
At the sports ground, AI-powered fitness equipment that tracks student performance in real time drew strong interest. The system allows teachers to tailor training while motivating students through data-driven feedback.
In discussions, UK principals also explored classroom management practices. Zheng said close cooperation between schools and parents is essential for managing classes of more than 40 students, though providing individualized instruction remains a challenge.
