Flocks of migratory birds have arrived along the Qiantang River as spring sets in, turning the waterfront into a lively ecological scene.

On the morning of March 22, birdwatchers gathered near Zhijiang Bridge after spotting a rare visitor — the Chinese merganser, often dubbed the "giant panda of birds".

The endangered species, known for its striking crest and elusive nature, was seen diving for fish and gliding across the water. It is highly sensitive to water quality and forest conditions, making it an important indicator of ecological health.

With temperatures rising in March, more migratory birds, such as egrets, spot-billed ducks, great crested grebes and gulls, have been stopping over in Hangzhou. Locations including West Lake and local wetlands have also seen increased bird activity.
