Hangzhou has launched its first AI-powered police patrol unit along West Lake, introducing a coordinated system of robot dogs, drones and unmanned vehicles to enhance public safety.
The new mechanized police formation began operating on March 25 at Bai Causeway, forming an integrated air-ground patrol network. Officials say the system goes beyond individual devices, enabling real-time data sharing and coordinated command between machines, shifting from simple human-machine interaction to full multi-device collaboration.
During a demonstration, an unmanned patrol vehicle navigated the crowded Bai Causeway while drones deployed automatically to monitor foot traffic and issue guidance via loudspeakers. In narrow or complex areas, robot dogs and drones can take over patrol tasks, ensuring continuous coverage.
Developed in response to the West Lake area's high visitor traffic and complex terrain, the system also incorporates AI rescue equipment for water emergencies and search operations in forested areas.
Police say the new unit has significantly improved response efficiency and will play a key role during upcoming peak travel periods, including the Qingming Festival holiday.
