For English tour guide Xu Zhucheng, a 1-yuan ($0.15) banknote is more than currency — it is a gateway to China's culture.
A gold-level guide in Hangzhou with millions of followers online, Xu has welcomed more than 200 overseas tour groups to West Lake every year for the past decade. His 2025 short video explaining West Lake through the 1-yuan note went viral, gaining over 10 million views within 24 hours.
"When I show visitors the banknote and point to Three Pools Mirroring the Moon on the lake, they are amazed to see the scene come alive," Xu said.
To make history more tangible, Xu also carries a "treasure box" filled with cultural replicas, including movable type printing blocks, ancient paintings and calligraphy works, allowing international visitors to experience traditional Chinese culture firsthand.
After switching from foreign trade to tour guiding, Xu began studying Chinese history, poetry and intangible cultural heritage, aiming not only to show visitors West Lake's beauty but also its cultural spirit.
"Learning English used to help us see the world. Now it helps the world better understand China," he said.
